Nearly half a million CREDO activists oppose Citizens United

On Wednesday, January 21, CREDO, a progressive social change organization that fights to get money out of politics, released the following statement to mark the fifth anniversary of Citizens United v. FEC, the destructive Supreme Court decision which unleashed a flood of unlimited corporate spending on elections, wrecking the foundation of our democracy:

“Each member of Congress must decide which side they’re on: Democracy or corporate oligarchy,” said Zack Malitz, campaign manager with CREDO Action. “In the wake of Citizens United, there is no middle ground left. Our elected officials are either fighting to stop corporations and billionaires from totally dominating the political system, or cynically doing their bidding,” he added. “Congress must pass a constitutional amendment overturning Citizens United.”

CREDO has worked extensively to engage it’s 3.5 million members in the fight to overturn Citizens United and roll back corporate dominance of the American political system.

MORE THAN 448,000 CREDO ACTIVISTS HAVE SIGNED PETITIONS IN SUPPORT OF A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO OVERTURN CITIZENS UNITED: In the last two years, nearly half a million CREDO members have called on Congress to overturn Citizens United by amending the Constitution.

CREDO’s most recent petition can be found here: http://act.credoaction.com/sign/cu_5th_anniversary/

CREDO MEMBERS MADE 3,310 CALLS TO CONGRESS IN SUPPORT OF A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO OVERTURN CITIZENS UNITED: CREDO played a key role in the fight last year to pass S.J. Res. 19, a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. In advance of the Senate’s vote, CREDO members inundated the Senate with calls urging senators to vote ‘yes’ on the amendment.

CREDO MEMBERS HAVE ATTENDED DOZENS OF EVENTS CALLING ON CONGRESS TO OVERTURN CITIZENS UNITED: Before the Senate’s vote on S.J. Res. 19, CREDO recruited its members to attend dozens of rallies and petition deliveries, coordinated by Money Out / Voters In and Public Citizen, urging senators  to vote for the amendment. To commemorate the fifth anniversary of Citizens United, CREDO is once again partnering with Money Out / Voters In and Public Citizen to recruit for rallies, lobby days and marches across the country.

CREDO Action, part of CREDO Mobile, is a social change network of 3.5 million activists, sending millions of petition signatures and tens of thousands of phone calls to decision-makers each year. CREDO Action members also participate in meetings, protests and other direct action for progressive change.
