CREDO Condemns Senate’s Fast Tracking of Fast Track

By May 21, 2015 No Comments

CREDO Action Deputy Political Director Murshed Zaheed spoke out against the Senate’s passage of cloture on Trade Promotion Authority:

“By voting to close debate on Trade Promotion Authority, the Senate fast tracked, fast track, said Murshed Zaheed, Deputy Political Director of CREDO Action. “When the Senate debated fast track in 2002, it spent three weeks considering the legislation. This year Barack Obama and Mitch McConnell jammed through TPA, with limited amendments, focused more on getting Senators home for vacation, than on the Americans who have lost their jobs due to poorly negotiated trade deals,” Zaheed added.

CREDO has played a key role in the fight against Trade Promotion Authority and the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Highlights of CREDO members’ activism on the Trans-Pacific Partnership so far in 2015 include:

12,000+ PHONE CALLS TO DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSIONAL LEADERSHIP: Already this year, CREDO activists have made more than 12,500 calls in opposition to Fast Track authority and the Trans-Pacific Partnership to Democratic congressional leadership, which includes over 9,800 calls to Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden.

MORE THAN 185,000 ACTIVISTS PRESSURE PRESIDENT OBAMA TO RELEASE THE FULL TEXT OF THE TPP: Following a request from Senator Bernie Sanders, in the past few weeks, more than 185,000 CREDO activists have signed a petition calling on the Obama administration to release the full text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and any other pending trade agreements. After Senators Warren and Brown echoed Senator Sanders’ request in an April 25 letter to President Obama, an additional 179,000 activists signed another petition with a similar ask.

CREDO MEMBERS DONATED MORE THAN $58,000 TO PUBLIC CITIZEN’S GLOBAL TRADE WATCH PROGRAM: In March, CREDO members donated $58,134 to support Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch Program’s activism in opposition to Trade Promotion Authority and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

70,000+ PETITION HILLARY CLINTON TO OPPOSE FAST TRACK AND TPP: More than 70,000 CREDO activists have signed a petition urging Hillary Clinton to “immediately announce [her] public opposition to Fast Track trade authority and say no to secret trade deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership.”

CREDO CUSTOMERS SEND 1,000+ LETTERS TO HOUSE MINORITY WHIP STENY HOYER: More than 1,000 CREDO activists responded to a call to action in their phone bills in January by sending letters to House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer urging him to oppose Fast Track for the TPP.
