CREDO on Senate Fast Track vote: A “game-changing victory”

FYI – In response to the Senate failing to invoke cloture on a bill granting the Obama administration Trade Promotion Authority to negotiate the Trans-Pacific Partnership, CREDO Action released the following statement:

Blocking Fast Track for the TPP is a game-changing victory for Democrats who refuse to sell out main street to Wall Street and for the hundreds of thousands of grassroots activists who have their backs,” said Murshed Zaheed, Deputy Political Director at CREDO Action. “Just a few weeks ago everyone expected the Fast Track bill to sail through the Senate,” Zaheed continued. “Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid’s brilliant maneuver to slow down Fast Track with today’s cloture vote made this victory possible.

CREDO has played a key role in the fight against Trade Promotion Authority and the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Highlights of CREDO members’ activism on the Trans-Pacific Partnership so far in 2015 include:

12,000+ PHONE CALLS TO DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSIONAL LEADERSHIP: Already this year, CREDO activists have made more than 12,500 calls in opposition to Fast Track authority and the Trans-Pacific Partnership to Democratic congressional leadership, which includes over 9,800 calls to Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden.

MORE THAN 185,000 ACTIVISTS PRESSURE PRESIDENT OBAMA TO RELEASE THE FULL TEXT OF THE TPP: Following a request from Senator Bernie Sanders, in the past few weeks, more than 185,000 CREDO activists have signed a petition calling on the Obama administration to release the full text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and any other pending trade agreements. After Senators Warren and Brown echoed Senator Sanders’ request in an April 25 letter to President Obama, an additional 179,000 activists signed another petition with a similar ask.

CREDO MEMBERS DONATED MORE THAN $58,000 TO PUBLIC CITIZEN’S GLOBAL TRADE WATCH PROGRAM: In March, CREDO members donated $58,134 to support Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch Program’s activism in opposition to Trade Promotion Authority and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

70,000+ PETITION HILLARY CLINTON TO OPPOSE FAST TRACK AND TPP: More than 70,000 CREDO activists have signed a petition urging Hillary Clinton to “immediately announce [her] public opposition to Fast Track trade authority and say no to secret trade deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership.”

CREDO CUSTOMERS SEND 1,000+ LETTERS TO HOUSE MINORITY WHIP STENY HOYER: More than 1,000 CREDO activists responded to a call to action in their phone bills in January by sending letters to House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer urging him to oppose Fast Track for the TPP. NEARLY ONE MILLION PETITION SIGNATURES AGAINST THE TPP IN 2013 AND 2014: In 2013 and 2014, CREDO generated 913,572 petition signatures to Congress and the Obama administration in opposition to Trade Promotion Authority and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

NEARLY 12,000 PHONE CALLS TO ELECTED OFFICIALS IN 2013 AND 2014: In 2013 and 2014, CREDO activists made 11,985 phone calls to the Obama administration and members of Congress in opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
