CREDO launches MissionNotAccomplished.com
to highlight President Obama’s hypocrisy on climate change.

August 26, 2015 – CREDO Action has launched a new website at MissionNotAccomplished.com comparing President Obama’s trip to Alaska next week to President George W. Bush’s ‘Mission Accomplished’ speech on Iraq on May 1, 2003.

Like President Bush’s disastrously out-of-touch declaration of victory in the Iraq War, President Obama touting his climate policies in Alaska just days after giving Shell approval to drill for oil in the Arctic is a wake up call about a president deeply in denial. The concept behind the microsite is spelled out in detail in a Medium.com piece entitled ‘President Obama’s ‘Mission Accomplished’ Moment.’

CREDO also released a video remixing the White House video promo of President Obama’s Arctic trip to include President Obama’s record of fossil fuel extraction – highlighting the self-defeating climate hypocrisy of his climate and energy policy.

Going to Alaska to talk about climate change is is President Obama’s ‘Mission Accomplished’ moment,” said CREDO Climate Campaigns Director Elijah Zarlin. Zarlin continued, “There is no clearer symbol of the self-defeating hypocrisy at the heart of President Obama’s energy policy, then going to Alaska to talk about the urgency of climate change after allowing Shell to drill in the Arctic.”

Zarlin added, “Just as ‘Mission Accomplished’ was a wake up call about a president in deep denial, so too is President Obama’s Alaska trip. Climate leaders don’t drill the Arctic. It’s long past time for President Obama to change his energy strategy from ‘All-of-the-Above’ to ‘Keep it in the Ground.’

INTERVIEW AVAILABILITY: CREDO’s Climate Campaigns Director Elijah Zarlin – who was previously a Senior Email Writer on President Obama’s 2008 campaign – is available for telephone interviews. You can contact Elijah directly at ezarlin@credoaction.com to schedule an interview.

The website includes a petition with the following text: “Climate Leaders Don’t Drill the Arctic. Talking about the urgency of climate change while allowing massive fossil fuel extraction isn’t leadership, it’s hypocrisy. Science says we must not burn 80% of known fossil fuel reserves, including all Arctic oil. President Obama, to lead on climate, you must Keep it in the Ground.”

President Obama, 'This is our moment to get this right and leav some-thing better for our kids. Let's make the most of that opportunity.'
After signing the petition, activists are encouraged to make phone calls to the Obama administration with a similar message.

CREDO Action, part of CREDO Mobile, is a social change network of 3.8 million activists, sending millions of petition signatures and tens of thousands of phone calls to decision-makers each year. CREDO Action members also participate in meetings, protests and other direct action for progressive change.
