CREDO: Democratic Senators can’t have it both ways on the Iran deal

By September 8, 2015 No Comments

In response to Senators Blumenthal, Wyden and Peters announcing their support for the Iran nuclear deal, CREDO Action released the following statement:

With 41 Senators on the record in support of the Iran nuclear deal, it is more critical than ever for supporters of diplomacy to stick together and stop the resolution of disapproval from moving forward by voting against cloture,” said Zack Malitz, campaign manager at CREDO Action.

Democratic Senators can’t have it both ways,” Malitz continued. “Voting for cloture on the resolution of disapproval, as Chris Coons has reportedly threatened to do, is a vote to undermine diplomacy. Further, Coons’ public waffling on the cloture vote puts overwhelming pressure on Senator Cantwell to declare that she supports the deal and will vote against cloture.

Malitz added, “Democrats who support this deal have a responsibility to do everything in their power to make sure it is successful. That means voting against cloture on the resolution of disapproval and opposing any poison pills that would undermine it.

CREDO and its 3.8 million members have fought for years to stop Republicans from sabotaging diplomacy and starting a war with Iran. Here’s what we’re doing right now:

CREDO ACTIVISTS SPEAK OUT IN AUGUST: CREDO activists across the country spoke out for peace at hundreds of rallies, town halls and meetings with their members of Congress throughout the August recess.

STOPWARWITHIRAN.COM DRIVES SURGE OF GRASSROOTS ACTIVISM: Within hours of the deal being announced on July 14, CREDO and allies launched StopWarWithIran.com to serve as a hub for progressive activism in support of the deal. The site has generated more than 450,000 petition signatures and 52,000 phone calls to Democrats in Congress in support of the deal.

EXPLAINER VIDEO: PREVENTING A WAR WITH IRAN: On July 17, CREDO released a short video explaining how grassroots activism can stop Republicans from sabotaging the nuclear deal and pushing us into a war with Iran. The video can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIyPXpAHZH

Here’s what CREDO activists did earlier this year in support of diplomacy:

OVER 100,000 CREDO ACTIVISTS TOLD SENATOR CHUCK SCHUMER NOT TO LEAD US TO WAR WITH IRAN: Shortly after Senator Reid announced his retirement and it became clear that Senator Schumer is almost certain to become the next Democratic leader in the Senate, Senator Schumer loudly endorsed the Corker anti-diplomacy bill. 106,327 CREDO activists signed a petition saying that Senator Schumer was wrong on Iraq, wrong on Iran and wrong for Senate Democratic leadership.

NEARLY 150,000 CREDO ACTIVISTS URGED SENATE DEMOCRATIC LEADERS TO INTRODUCE A RESOLUTION DENOUNCING TOM COTTON’S DANGEROUS LETTER AND THE SENATORS WHO SIGNED IT: After Tom Cotton and 46 other Republican senators sent a letter to Iran’s government threatening to sabotage any deal, 146,762 spoke out and urged Senate Democratic leaders to put forward a resolution condemning the letter and its signatories. The petition can be found here: http://act.credoaction.com/sign/gang_of_47

NEARLY 80,000 CREDO ACTIVISTS TOLD DEMOCRATS TO SKIP ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER NETANYAHU’S ANTI-DIPLOMACY SPEECH: 77,507 activists signed a petition to Democrats in Congress denouncing John Boehner for secretly arranging for Prime Minister Netanyahu to attack President Obama’s diplomacy with Iran in front of a joint session of Congress, and urging Democrats to skip the speech. The petition can be found here: http://act.credoaction.com/sign/boehner_iran_speech

ALMOST 100,000 CREDO ACTIVISTS TOLD SENATOR MENENDEZ TO STOP WARMONGERING ON IRAN: 98,854 CREDO members signed a petition calling out Senator Menendez for trying to start a war with Iran by colluding with Republicans to pass new sanctions. After hundreds of tweets and local press coverage, Menendez backed down and agreed to delay a vote on his dangerous bill.

CREDO Action, part of CREDO Mobile, is a social change network of 3.8 million activists, sending millions of petition signatures and more than 50,000 phone calls to decision-makers each year. CREDO Action members also participate in meetings, protests and other direct actions for progressive change.
