After Paris: Senate Dems must reject Republicans’ xenophobic agenda

CREDO Action released the statement below in response to reports that Senator Schumer is open to helping Republicans block refugees from entering the United States:

“From the Iraq war to the Iran nuclear deal, Senator Schumer has consistently been on the wrong side of major national security issues, so it comes as no surprise that he is now considering joining Republicans’ xenophobic attack on refugees,” said CREDO Deputy Political Director Murshed Zaheed.

“There’s nothing new about Republicans stoking racist paranoia to advance their xenophobic agenda,” added Zaheed. “But Republicans cannot act unless Senate Democrats join them.”

“Senator Schumer must realize that punishing refugees for a terrorist attack committed by Europeans would be cruel and counterproductive,” Zaheed continued. “Democrats in the Senate need to stand strong and reject Republicans’ hateful effort to stop refugees from entering the United States.”

Since Sunday evening, more than 43,000 activists have signed CREDO’s petition urging President Obama and Secretary of State Kerry to “reject hate directed towards Muslims, resist pressure for increased militarization, and show compassion by immediately expanding the number of refugees the United States will accept.”

In the coming days CREDO will pressure Senate Democrats to stop Republicans from blocking refugees from entering the country.
