SCOTUS Vacancy: CREDO launches a FULL COURT press on Senate Republicans
CREDO has activated an aggressive, multi-faceted campaign to pressure key Senate Republicans to allow an up-or-down vote on President Obama’s forthcoming Supreme Court nominee. Key components of the campaign include:
- Launching the new www.Obstructionist.Club activism hub activism hub
- Deploying a series of hard-hitting digital ads branding Republicans Senators as obstructionists on social media
- Rolling out localized CREDO Mobilize petitions led by local activists in targeted states
- Revving up a grassroots call campaign
“Considering Republicans have formed their own obstructionist club in the Senate, CREDO decided to give them an official website,” said Murshed Zaheed, acting political director of CREDO. “CREDO members will take action around the country to make sure members of the Senate who continue to participate in this unprecedented obstruction face accountability for their behavior,” Zaheed added.
Republican Senators targeted by CREDO’s campaign include: Kelly Ayotte (NH), Ron Johnson (WI), Rob Portman (OH), Pat Toomey (PA), John McCain (AZ), Roy Blunt (MO), Mitch McConnell (KY), Chuck Grassley (IA), Ted Cruz (TX) and Marco Rubio (FL).
Highlights of CREDO’s efforts to hold Republican obstructionists accountable include:
JUST-LAUNCHED: WWW.OBSTRUCTIONIST.CLUB SUPREME COURT VACANCY ACTIVISM HUB: CREDO’s new Obstructionist.Club website serves as a hub for activism and content on the unprecedented Republican obstructionism we’ve seen since the death of Justice Scalia. The site includes blog posts from experts, petition campaigns, call campaigns and other ways for activists to hold Republican Senators accountable for promising to obstruct President Obama’s forthcoming Supreme Court nominee.
DIGITAL AD CAMPAIGN TARGETS OBSTRUCTIONISTS ON SOCIAL MEDIA: CREDO launched a series of digital ads today calling out swing state Senate Republican obstructionists who have indicated that they won’t give President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee a fair hearing. The ads – which are being displayed to local Facebook users – include a headshot of each Republican Senator with an “OBSTRUCTIONIST” stamp on the forehead. Screenshots of specific ads are available upon request.
LOCAL ACTIVIST-GENERATED PETITIONS BUILD HOME STATE PRESSURE: Local activists in 10 states have launched CREDO Mobilize petitions urging their Senators to support fair hearings and an up-or-down vote on President Obama’s nominee. In less than 48 hours since the petitions were launched on Tuesday morning, more than 4,300 Floridians have signed the petition targeting Senator Rubio, and more than 3,600 Pennsylvanians have signed the petition targeting Senator Toomey. All of the petitions can be viewed at: http://credo.cm/obstructionists
GRASSROOTS CALL CAMPAIGN TARGETS KEY SWING STATE SENATE REPUBLICANS: Using a sophisticated call tool that connects them directly with the in-district and Washington, DC offices of key swing state Senate Republicans, CREDO activists have made more than 1,700 phone calls demanding an up-or-down vote on President Obama’s nominee.
CREDO also has a series of national petitions related to the Supreme Court vacancy:
250,000+ PETITION SENATE REPUBLICANS NOT TO OBSTRUCT PRES. OBAMA’S NOMINEE: Grassroots opposition to Republicans’ obstructionism is catching fire nationwide. Since Justice Scalia’s death, more than 255,000 activists signed a CREDO petition demanding that Senate Republicans “hold fair hearings and an up-or-down vote on President Obama’s nominee” for the Supreme Court.
95,000+ URGE PRESIDENT OBAMA TO NOMINATE A PROGRESSIVE: With some politicians and pundits arguing that President Obama should nominate a moderate to replace Justice Scalia, CREDO activists are urging him to instead nominate a progressive. More than 95,000 activists have signed a CREDO petition urging President Obama to “Nominate a progressive to replace Justice Antonin Scalia on the Supreme Court.”
80,000+ PETITION MAJOR MEDIA OUTLETS TO TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT REPUBLICAN OBSTRUCTION: CREDO is calling on major media outlets – including CNN, CBS, ABC, FOX, and The New York Times – to avoid false equivalences and fake evenhandedness in covering the Supreme Court nomination story. More than 83,000 CREDO activists have signed a petition urging major media outlets to “report the Republicans’ pledge to block a Supreme Court nomination for what it is: An unprecedented case of Republican obstructionism and anti-constitutional overreach.”
