CREDO and United We Dream Action Demand ICE Director,
Sarah Saldaña, Denounce Trump’s Racist, Anti-Immigrant Ideology
San Francisco – Ahead of the third and final presidential debate, United We Dream Action and CREDO Action have come together to demand Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director Sarah Saldaña denounce Donald Trump and make clear that her agency does not support Trump’s racist and anti-immigrant policies.
“ICE is the largest and best funded police force in the country, and its agents have now officially backed a candidate who believes Mexicans are rapists, proposes banning Muslims, treats women as sex objects, and views people of color as dangerous, even when innocent,” said Murshed Zaheed, Vice President and Political Director at CREDO. “Any presidential endorsement by ICE agents is troubling – but an endorsement of a fascist like Trump is simply terrifying for many immigrant families,” Zaheed continued. “ICE Director Sarah Saldaña must lead her agency to take a clear stand against Trump’s racism and hate.”
Sarah Saldaña’s refusal to denounce Trump’s dangerous rhetoric or even correct the record on Trump’s repeated claim that her agency has endorsed him are just the latest examples of her failed leadership as ICE director. Saldaña oversees a rogue agency that routinely implements early morning ambushes on refugee mothers and children and engages in violence towards those held in immigration detention centers. For CREDO and United We Dream Action the endorsement of Trump by the ICE agent union shows that these brutal policies are part of a larger racially biased ideology held by many of ICE’s agents.
“ICE’s Director, Sarah Saldaña, has allowed ICE agents to brutally terrorize our communities without consequences,” said Greisa Martinez, Advocacy Director for United We Dream Action, “That is not acceptable now and cannot continue in the next administration,” Martinez continued. “Reining in ICE has to be a top priority. ICE agents run roughshod over immigrant communities, using intimidation and fear tactics,” she added. “That has to change – and we will make sure it does.”
The animosity toward immigrant communities engendered by Donald Trump’s hate-filled campaign will continue regardless of who wins the election. CREDO and United We Dream Action will stand with immigrant communities and never stop fighting for a just and humane immigration system.
