Grassroots activism by CREDO members makes real change in our communities. Recently, action by members in Massachusetts helped bring pivotal wins for better elections and cleaner air. In November, we urged the state House to pass an election-reform package that would put in place Election Day registration, early voting, online voter registration, post-election audits of voting machines, and pre-registration for 16- and 17-year-olds. On May 22, Gov. Deval Patrick signed legislation ensuring all of these, with the exception of Election Day registration—but we’ll keep pushing till we get it done. In September 2012, members urged GDF Suez Energy to stop burning coal at its Mt. Tom coal power plant and, in June, GDF announced it would close the plant permanently by October. Now we can all breathe a little easier.
