In December, the Senate confirmed Dr. Vivek Murthy as Surgeon General, thanks to over 120,000 CREDO petition signers and 1,400 calls from CREDO members. As an internist and teacher at Harvard Medical School-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Murthy has impeccable credentials for the job. But the NRA attempted to torpedo his nomination because Murthy has acknowledged that gun violence is a public health issue, and has voiced support for various gun violence prevention measures like an assault weapons ban, mandatory safety training and ammunition sales limits. This confirmation is a clear message to all members of Congress that it is possible to take on the NRA’s extreme agenda and win.
