CREDO released the statement below in response to reports that the Department of Justice is investigating voter disenfranchisement in Arizona’s March 22 primary election:

“Investigating Arizona Republicans’ blatant voter disenfranchisement scheme is the right thing to do,” said CREDO Communications Director Josh Nelson. “We applaud the Department of Justice for acting quickly to respond to last month’s primary election debacle,” Nelson continued.

“Republicans around the country are finding nefarious new ways to suppress and dilute the votes of African-Americans and Latinos,” Nelson added. “The DOJ must remain vigilant and aggressively crack down on any Republican efforts to suppress Americans’ right to vote in 2016.”

In the past two weeks, more than 113,000 people signed a CREDO petition urging the Department of Justice to launch an immediate investigation into problems with Arizona’s March 22 primary. The full text of the petition reads:

“There’s no excuse for the excessively long lines and voting irregularities that disenfranchised countless voters in the March 22 primary. Launch an immediate investigation into voting problems in Arizona to ensure that all eligible voters are treated equally under the law.”
