Letter to Sec. Clinton highlights Gen. Clark’s Islamophobia

December 10, 2015 – Progressive organizations sent a letter to Hillary for America urging the campaign to “immediately remove Gen. Clark from his role in your campaign, and promise to do the same with any campaign surrogates caught aiding and abetting the dangerous anti-Muslim mob mentality fostered by your opponents.”

The letter was sent by CREDO Action, ColorOfChange.org, MPower Change, Emerge USA, Bend the Arc, Demand Progress, American Family Voices, We Act Radio, Presente.org, Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center, and the Muslim American Society of Boston.

In the wake of Donald Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States, Secretary Clinton, Senator Sanders and Governor O’Malley have appropriately denounced Mr. Trump’s increasingly Islamophobic remarks.

Yet the Clinton campaign has failed to reckon with the fact that one of her most visible campaign surrogates, retired General Wesley Clark, made an Islamophobic proposal of his own in July when he spoke favorably of the internment camps used during World War II and said that for radicalized Muslims “it’s our right and obligation to segregate them from the normal community for the duration of the conflict.”

General Clark has continued serving as a Hillary for America surrogate since he made his Islamophobic remarks. On Veterans Day, General Clark campaigned for Secretary Clinton at four events in Iowa. Hillary for America also sent a Veterans Day email from General Clark to its campaign email list. Then, just four days after the attacks in Paris, as Islamophobia was building toward a fever pitch, Hillary for America actively promoted General Clark’s endorsement of Senator Clinton on its Facebook page.
