WINNING TOGETHER We are millions of people taking action for progressive change

In response to the EPA’s announcement today that it has caved to the coal industry and will regulate coal ash as non-hazardous, CREDO released the following statement:

“There is simply no excuse for EPA’s dangerously weak coal ash rule, which treats toxic waste loaded with carcinogens like household garbage,” said Josh Nelson, campaign manager at CREDO Action, adding, “Coal ash contains some of the deadliest toxins known to humans,” Nelson continued, “In future decades, we will look back at this decision as one of the most irresponsible choices ever made by the EPA.”

CREDO activists have been fighting for stronger protections from coal ash for years:

  • In 2010, CREDO activists submitted more than 50,000 public comments urging the EPA not to cave to the coal industry, and to finalize the strongest possible coal ash regulations.
  • Last year, Nearly 100,000 CREDO activists signed a petition urging Congress not to block the EPA from regulating coal ash as hazardous waste. More than 2,300 CREDO activists called their Senators with the same ask.

CREDO Action, part of CREDO Mobile, is a social change network of 3.5 million activists, sending millions of petition signatures and tens of thousands of phone calls to decision-makers each year. CREDO Action members also participate in meetings, protests and other direct action for progressive change.
