FYI – CREDO Action co-director Heidi Hess issued the following statement after the United States Supreme Court issued a decision upholding the practice of partisan gerrymandering to protect entrenched incumbent elected officials from competitive elections:
“It is absolutely unconscionable that we live in a political system where elected officials get to pick their own voters. So much of what’s wrong with Congress has to do with the fact that people in Congress don’t feel at all accountable to the people they’re supposed to represent — which is why they’re willing to ignore the most pressing issues of our time and simply give away big tax cuts to corporations. Gerrymandering is at the heart of that system, and today’s ruling is nothing less than a fundamental strike at the principle of one person, one vote.
“This decision is little more than a free giveaway to Republicans, who have for years gamed the system and drawn their own district lines to dilute the political voices of communities of color and progressives across the country. Today’s decision also underlines the need for fundamental reform to the Supreme Court, which has become little more than a rubber stamp for the fever dreams of Republicans and corporations. We need drastic change to the nation’s most powerful judicial body, which is why we’re calling on every single Democratic candidate for President to put out their plan to address the judicial obstruction they’ll face at the hands of Brett Kavanaugh and the rest of his right-wing colleagues. Without addressing this enormous obstacle, essentially every progressive priority will simply be dead on arrival, even under a new president and Congress.”
