CREDO will grant up to $500 each to 50 activists or local groups doing
the work of Climate Heroes to fight fossil fuels in their community

August 5, 2015 – Today CREDO launched the CREDO Climate Heroes program to empower and fund local organizing to protest, blockade and confront the fossil fuel industry and decision-makers who are standing on the wrong side of history.

Through the Climate Heroes program, CREDO will grant up to $500 to 50 activists or local groups doing the work of Climate Heroes to fight fossil fuels in their community.

Many front-line activists lack the funds for even basic campaign materials. These grants will empower local organizing to fight climate change and fossil fuel projects – including actions that literally might not have been possible otherwise. The deadline to apply is August 26 at 6 p.m. Pacific Time. Activists winning the grants will be notified on September 3.

With politicians refusing to stand up to the fossil fuel industry, the responsibility to force action on climate change has increasingly fallen on courageous individuals organizing in their own communities,” said Becky Bond, Political Director at CREDO Action. “They are Climate Heroes.”

Bond continued, “CREDO wants to support the work of local activists working on the ground to slow climate change. Our grants will help individuals plan direct action targeting the fossil fuel industry, including peaceful civil disobedience.”

Whether they are blocking Shell’s drilling ship, organizing against tar sands pipelines from South Dakota to Maine, packing local hearings against refinery and oil train expansions, holding sit-ins at corporate headquarters to demand an end to mountaintop removal, fighting back against their electric utility’s attack on solar power, or urging their city council to pass a local fracking ban, these climate heroes are emerging as our last, best line of defense against the acceleration of climate change,” Bond added.

CREDO Action, part of CREDO Mobile, is a social change network of 3.8 million activists, sending millions of petition signatures and over tens of thousands of phone calls to decision-makers each year. Over the years, CREDO members have given more than $79 million to progressive non-profits. CREDO activists across the country have participated in local, state and national campaigns to stop the Keystone XL pipeline – including the Keystone XL Pledge of Resistance, which organized nearly 100,000 activists to pledge to risk arrest if the president approved the pipeline – ban fracking, abolish coal, block explosive oil trains, prevent drilling in the arctic, and stop other fossil fuel extraction and infrastructure.
