CREDO Action staff, including constituents of Speaker Nancy Pelosi and an undocumented person were removed by security from the San Francisco Democrats’ “Heart of the Resistance” dinner, where Nancy Pelosi was awarded a lifetime achievement award.
Four activists including CREDO Action campaign manager Thaís Marques and co-director Heidi Hess disrupted the award ceremony with a call-and-response chant. Marques led the disruption, calling out: “Speaker Pelosi, I am undocumented. My community is being targeted by ICE and killed by white supremacists. Fight for my community and impeach Trump NOW. We can’t wait. Impeach Trump.”
Many Democrats at the dinner — who all paid at least $250 each to attend — shouted Marques down while Speaker Pelosi herself talked over Marques rather than listening to and engaging with her.
San Francisco police removed Marques, Hess and other activists from the event. CREDO has received no response from Speaker Pelosi, her staff or the San Francisco Democratic Party yet.
“The time to act is now — we can’t wait on impeachment any longer,” said CREDO campaign manager Thaís Marques afterward. “I came here tonight to make sure Speaker Pelosi knows that my people, who are being killed by Trump’s white supremacy, cannot wait any longer for her moral leadership on impeachment. I expected her, and the other attendees, to at least hear me out, but I literally screamed into a void of privilege, complacency and denial. Pelosi’s refusal to hear me speaks volumes about the limits of today’s Democratic Party, which congratulates itself on hating Trump but is unwilling to act to rein him in.”
