“Secretary Hillary Clinton deserves praise for splitting with the Obama administration and opposing the TPP,” said CREDO Deputy Political Director Murshed Zaheed. “If Hillary Clinton – who worked on the Trans-Pacific Partnership as Secretary of State – can change her mind about the Trans-Pacific Partnership, so can the small number of Democrats in Congress who have previously voiced their support.”
CREDO has played a key role in the fight against Trade Promotion Authority and the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Highlights of CREDO members’ activism on the Trans-Pacific Partnership so far in 2015 include:
70,000+ PETITION SECRETARY CLINTON TO OPPOSE FAST TRACK: In April, more than 70,000 CREDO activists have signed a petition urging Secretary Clinton to “immediately announce [her] public opposition to Fast Track trade authority and say no to secret trade deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership.”
15,000+ PHONE CALLS TO DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSIONAL LEADERSHIP AND 40,000 TOTAL PHONE CALLS TO CONGRESS: CREDO activists have made more than 15,000 calls in opposition to Fast Track authority and the Trans-Pacific Partnership to Democratic congressional leadership, which includes over 9,800 calls to Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden. CREDO activists have made more than 40,000 total phone calls to members of Congress in opposition to Fast Track in the past two years.
200+ ATTENDED RALLY AGAINST FAST TRACK OUTSIDE NANCY PELOSI’S SAN FRANCISCO OFFICE: On June 9, CREDO organized a rally against Fast Track outside Nancy Pelosi’s San Francisco office. ORGANIZED DELIVERY OF MORE THAN TWO MILLION PETITION SIGNATURES AGAINST FAST TRACK: On June 3, CREDO organized a press conference and petition delivery at which more than two million petition signatures were delivered to Congress. 185,000+ PETITION OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO RELEASE FULL TEXT OF ALL PENDING TRADE AGREEMENTS: More than 185,000 CREDO activists have signed a petition to rally around Senator Sanders’ demand for transparency in the TPP negotiations by calling on the Obama administration to release the full text of all pending trade agreements to Members of Congress, their staff and the American Public. After Senators Warren and Brown echoed Senator Sanders’ request in an April 25 letter to President Obama, an additional 179,000 activists signed another petition with a similar ask.
CREDO MEMBERS DONATED MORE THAN $58,000 TO PUBLIC CITIZEN’S GLOBAL TRADE WATCH PROGRAM: In March, CREDO members donated $58,134 to support Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch Program’s activism in opposition to Trade Promotion Authority and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
RELEASED ONLINE ADS TARGETING MEMBERS OF CONGRESS FOR SUPPORTING MEDICARE CUTS IN TRADE PACKAGE: On May 20, CREDO released a series of online ads targeting members of the House of Representatives and Senate who support Trade Promotion Authority and affiliated legislation which uses Medicare as a piggy bank to pay for Trade Adjustment Assistance. CREDO CUSTOMERS SEND 1,000+ LETTERS TO HOUSE MINORITY WHIP STENY HOYER: More than 1,000 CREDO activists responded to a call to action in their phone bills in January by sending letters to House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer urging him to oppose Fast Track for the TPP. OVER 147,000 CREDO MEMBERS URGED TELEVISION NETWORKS TO COVER THE TPP: In 2014 over 147,000 CREDO members signed a petition launched by Congresswoman Louise Slaughter – a senior member of House Democratic leadership – on CREDOMobilize.com, urging key American television news networks to cover the TPP.
NEARLY ONE MILLION PETITION SIGNATURES AGAINST THE TPP IN 2013 AND 2014: In 2013 and 2014, CREDO generated 913,572 petition signatures to Congress and the Obama administration in opposition to Trade Promotion Authority and the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
NEARLY 12,000 PHONE CALLS TO ELECTED OFFICIALS IN 2013 AND 2014: In 2013 and 2014, CREDO activists made 11,985 phone calls to the Obama administration and members of Congress in opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
