FYI — CREDO Action launched a campaign this morning calling on Speaker Pelosi to bring the House back into session to pass an assault weapons ban immediately. This builds on the momentum for real legislative change in our gun laws following the open letter to Speaker Pelosi with 48 members of Congress urging an end to recess.
CREDO is also putting massive pressure on Mitch McConnell — over 115,000 signed onto a petition in the last two days demanding McConnell bring the Senate back from recess to pass the background check bills the House passed in February. Plus, hundreds of CREDO members have been calling their Republican senators and McConnell’s Kentucky offices to push for action after the mass shootings in El Paso, Dayton, Gilroy, and Chicago in the last two weeks.
“Congress needs to come back to DC immediately and respond to this crisis by passing real gun control laws that will protect our families and communities. We can’t compromise for one second longer — people are dying,” said CREDO Action campaigns director Nicole Regalado.
“Mitch McConnell has always stood in the way of reforming our gun laws while happily taking the NRA’s blood money, earning him the apt title of Massacre Mitch,” she continued. “Nancy Pelosi’s push for incremental reforms like background checks is a step in the right direction, but it doesn’t go far enough. It’s far past time for Congress to ban assault weapons.”
“The human cost of Congress’s failed leadership is adding up everyday — there must be real action to stop these mass shootings right away. We can’t afford to wait.”
CREDO Action, part of CREDO Mobile, is a social change network of millions of activists, sending tens of millions of petition signatures and hundreds of thousands of phone calls to decision-makers each year. CREDO Action members also participate in meetings, protests and other direct action for progressive change.
