CREDO Action Co-Director Heidi Hess released the following statement in response to reports that the House will vote today on a resolution to rebuke Rep. Ilhan Omar:
“This is a dangerous waste of time. Democrats should be spending their time in Congress investigating the purveyors of hate in the Trump White House, not pushing platitudes in order to implicitly condemn one of their own. The next time Rep. Ilhan Omar faces a disingenuous smear, Democratic leaders in the House should have her back, and refuse to police or shame her in order to silence legitimate debate over American foreign policy.”
In February, more than 50,000 CREDO members signed a petition to House Democrats urging them to stand with Rep. Omar. The full petition, which can be found here, reads:
“Stand with Rep. Ilhan Omar. Refuse to cave to or legitimize right-wing, white supremacist attacks against her, protect her committee seats and defend her good standing within the Democratic Party.”
CREDO Action, part of CREDO Mobile, is a social change network of over five million activists, sending tens of millions of petition signatures and hundreds of thousands of phone calls to decision-makers each year. CREDO Action members also participate in meetings, protests and other direct action for progressive change.
