CREDO released the statement below in response to Trump’s threat to shut down the government if Democrats won’t help pay for a border wall:
“Just like Mexico, congressional Democrats have no intention of paying for Trump’s border wall,” CREDO Co-Director Heidi Hess said. “Trump’s tantrums and threats won’t change the fact that most Americans remain opposed to Trump’s dream of building a monument to his racism on the southern border,” she said. “Democratic Leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer must stand strong and refuse to support any spending for a border wall or increased funding for ICE or CBP,” Hess continued. “If they stand strong, progressives will have their back,” she added. “If they cave to Trump’s racist agenda, we’ll hold them accountable.”
On Saturday, CREDO and Movimiento Cosecha organized a prayer circle at the Statue of Liberty to resist Trump’s attacks on immigrant communities and demand that Democratic leaders Schumer and Pelosi block funding of the border wall and the expansion of ICE and CBP. Video of the prayer circle can be viewed here.
