CREDO released the statement below on today’s cloture vote ensuring that Andrew Wheeler will be confirmed as Scott Pruitt’s deputy at the EPA:
“It’s hard to imagine a worse person for a top job at the EPA than former coal industry lobbyist Andrew Wheeler,” CREDO Action Co-Director Josh Nelson said. “Thanks to a Republican Party that votes in lockstep with Donald Trump and a handful of feckless Democrats, Wheeler will be next in line to run the EPA when Scott Pruitt finally resigns or gets fired for his endless stream of scandals and corruption.”
“Countless Americans will suffer needlessly and die prematurely as a result of the reckless decisions Andrew Wheeler will make in this powerful role,” Nelson continued. “Each and every Senator who made that possible by voting to confirm Wheeler today should grapple with that reality for the rest of their life.”
More than 150,000 people signed CREDO’s petition urging the Senate to “block and resist the nomination of coal lobbyist Andrew Wheeler for deputy administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.”
More than 7,000 CREDO members also called key Senate offices with the same demand.
CREDO Action, part of CREDO Mobile, is a social change network of over five million activists, sending tens of millions of petition signatures and hundreds of thousands of phone calls to decision-makers each year. CREDO Action members also participate in meetings, protests and other direct action for progressive change.
