WINNING TOGETHER We are millions of people taking action for progressive change

Following the president’s announcement that he would not approve the Keystone XL pipeline if it was found to significantly increase carbon pollution, CREDO’s Political Director, Becky Bond, released the following statement:

“No one expected President Obama to address the Keystone XL pipeline in his first major climate speech. But because of massive grassroots pressure, including a Pledge of Resistance signed by over 62,000 Americans pledging to risk arrest in peaceful civil disobedience, the president announced that he could not approve Keystone XL if it increases the carbon emissions that fuel climate change. And the consensus from EPA and scientists could not be more clear — it does.

“This breakthrough announcement on Keystone, when combined with an aggressive rule to reduce carbon pollution from existing power plants, represents a major step forward for the United States when it comes to leading the world in the fight against climate change. With these two announcements, the president moves closer to attacking climate change with the full weight of his office.

“We are grateful to the president for acting to protect Americans and the world from the dire threat of climate change. And we are grateful to the activists who will continue standing with us to push the president to act, and stand up to the ferocious counterattack on the president from the fossil fuel industry and the science-denying Republican obstructionists who serve them.”
