WINNING TOGETHER We are millions of people taking action for progressive change

FYI — Following the news that the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in favor of lifting campaign spending limits in the McCutcheon case, CREDO, a progressive organization that has long worked to overturn the Citizens United decision, reacted to the news:

“The corrosive and corrupting influence of campaign cash on our democracy is obvious to the American people — and it is astonishing that our Supreme Court continues to rule in favor of corporations and billionaires at the expense of voters and our democratic process,” said Becky Bond, political director of CREDO. “Overturning Citizens United is the first step towards real reform — we must take action to stop the Supreme Court from literally destroying the one-person, one vote constitutional basis of our democracy.”

Here are a few stats on CREDO’s work on ending the corrupting force of money in politics:

  • CREDO recently participated in a groundbreaking study by two academics, David Broockman from UC Berkeley and Josh Kalla from Yale University, which found that donors gain better access than everyday constituents to members of congress and senior level staff. The study was the first of its kind to provide empirical evidence showing that money does indeed influence politicians in the halls of Congress. Read the study here.
  • CREDO has fought on all fronts to overturn Citizens United and end corporate personhood, with over 500,000 CREDO members signing petitions and making calls.
  • CREDO has donated more than $1,000,000 since 2010 to groups working to expose and minimize the damaging effects of Citizens United, including groups working on a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and end corporate personhood.
