The NFL’s dramatic new policy on violence against women is a huge victory for thousands of CREDO activists who spoke out after Goodell’s Ray Rice decision

Following the news that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has implemented new stricter guidance on how the league will punish players who commit domestic violence — with a 6 game suspension for the first offense and a lifetime ban for a subsequent offense — CREDO, a group that has been leading the campaign to get the NFL to stop treating violence against women as a less serious offense than smoking pot, released this statement:

“NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell should be applauded for admitting his mistake and doing the right thing,” said Becky Bond, political director of CREDO. “This decision by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to change the league’s policy on how it disciplines players who beat their wives and girlfriends is a big win, not just for women, but for all NFL players, staff and fans,”

CREDO, a national group that fights for women’s rights, has spent months pressuring the NFL to take violence against women seriously. Here are a few stats on CREDO’s activism on the issue:

  • CREDO members have reported making 737 calls to NFL Headquarters demanding that the league change its policy regarding domestic violence incidents.
  • More than 81,000 people signed CREDO’s petition urging the NFL to take domestic violence seriously. The petition was delivered to Roger Goodell last week.
  • CREDO members generated more than 1,500 tweets urging the NFL to change its policy regarding domestic violence incidents.
