Senate Democratic Leader Reid accepted signatures from
CREDO, MoveOn, Daily Kos and Democracy for America

September 22, Washington – Progressive groups delivered 1,236,596 petition signatures today urging Congress not to cut any federal funding to Planned Parenthood.

The petition signatures, which were collected by CREDO, MoveOn.org Civic Action, Daily Kos and Democracy for America, were accepted by Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid in his office in the Capitol this afternoon.

“The cold, hard fact is that a vote to defund Planned Parenthood is a vote to limit women’s access to cancer screenings, contraceptives, and all the other important services Planned Parenthood provides.” Senator Reid said at the event. “This Planned Parenthood bill isn’t going anywhere here in the Senate.” Reid added.

“No cuts, no compromises,” added Senator Elizabeth Warren, who was also in attendance.

“CREDO is proud to stand with Planned Parenthood in the face of the latest round of extremist right-wing attacks,” said Becky Bond, political director at CREDO Action. “Planned Parenthood provides vital healthcare services to millions of women – that’s the real reason Republicans want to destroy it,” Bond continued, adding, “Congress must stand up to the anti-abortion extremists threatening to shutdown the government and reject any cuts to Planned Parenthood’s federal funding.”

“Republicans have made Planned Parenthood breast cancer screenings, Pap smears, and well-woman visits into a political football in this year’s budget fight and are now threatening to shut down the government to deny healthcare to women and families,” said Anna Galland, executive director, MoveOn.org Civic Action. “MoveOn members across the country urge Democrats in Congress to stand strong in the face of GOP shutdown threats and ensure that crucial funding for Planned Parenthood isn’t jeopardized. For nearly 100 years, Planned Parenthood has proved a crucial resource for millions of women across the country. It’s long past time for Republicans to learn that they can’t legislate by holding crucial healthcare funding hostage and making shutdown threats,” Galland added.

“Women’s lives depend on maintaining funding for Planned Parenthood, period,” said Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America. “The American people expect every single Democrat in Congress to reject Republican efforts to force a false choice between women’s lives and a functioning government. There is no room to cut corners or hedge bets, defunding Planned Parenthood is simply not acceptable,” Chamberlain added.

“Republican demands to defund Planned Parenthood and threats to shut down the government are abhorrent,” said Rachel Colyer, Senior Campaign Director, DailyKos. “We stand with Planned Parenthood against these offensive attacks on the millions of Americans who rely on their critical health care services,” Colyer added.
