WINNING TOGETHER We are millions of people taking action for progressive change

President Obama attacked his progressive base today in an address to OFA volunteers. In a speech delivered in Georgetown and a video emailed to OFA supporters, the president said Americans who oppose Fast Track Approval for the Trans-Pacific Partnership don’t know what they are talking about, and compared them to Sarah Palin and others who evoked “death panels” in the debate over health care reform. CREDO Action released the following statement in response:

“President Obama is clearly feeling the grassroots pressure on Fast Track,” said Becky Bond, Political Director at CREDO Action, adding “Comparing progressive activists who oppose fast tracking this deal through Congress to Sarah Palin and her outrageous invocation of ‘death panels’ is beneath this president. It’s ironic that he claims critics of the TPP ‘don’t know what they’re talking about’ when it’s his administration that is refusing to release the text of his secret trade agreement to the public or even to members of Congress.”

Bond continued, “President Obama is on the defensive, and starting to make unforced errors in his campaign to ram this secret trade agreement through Congress. The Obama administration should immediately release the text of the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement to the public and Congress so we can have the spirited and informed public debate such a major agreement deserves.”

More than 158,000 CREDO activists have signed a petition urging transparency in the TPP negotiations by calling on the Obama administration to release the full text of all pending trade agreements to Members of Congress, their staff and the American Public.
