CREDO Action released the following statement in response to Interior Secretary Sally Jewell’s announcement of a “pause” on new federal coal leases:

Since he took office, the federal coal leasing program has been perhaps the most egregious stain on President Obama’s climate record,” said Elijah Zarlin, Director of Climate Campaigns at CREDO. “It is a welcome and long-overdue move to put a stop to our federal coal giveaway, but if President Obama is serious about leaving a mark of responsible climate leadership, he can not simply set his sights on coal and leave blinders on to other fossil fuels.” Zarlin continued.

The President should stop issuing new sales of all fossil fuels on federal lands and waters – not just coal – which are responsible for nearly 25 percent of U.S. fossil fuel emissions,” Zarlin added. “Any good faith effort to meet international climate targets necessitates that the vast majority of all remaining coal, oil and natural gas on federal lands must stay in the ground.

CREDO has been fighting to shut down the federal coal leasing program for years. Highlights of activism from CREDO customers and activists include:

CREDO CUSTOMERS SENT 18,000+ LETTERS TO INTERIOR SEC. JEWELL: In May 2013, more than 10,000 CREDO customers responded to a call to action in their phone bills by sending letters to Interior Secretary Sally Jewell asking her to “immediately place a moratorium on the federal coal-leasing program.” In July 2015, another 8,900 CREDO customers sent letters to Secretary Jewell demanding that she “stop the Powder River Basin coal leases.” Here are the calls to action CREDO customers received in their phone bills:

I urge you to issue an executive order that instructs federal agencies to stop granting new and expanded leases to extract coal, oil and gas from public lands and coastal waters.”

103,000 SIGN SENATOR MERKLEY’S CREDO PETITION TELLING CONGRESS TO “KEEP IT IN THE GROUND”: In November 2015, U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley launched a petition on CREDOmobilize.com, CREDO’s activist-generated petition site, calling on Congress to “end all new leases for coal mining, oil drilling, tar sands extraction, and fracking on our public lands, stop all new leases for drilling off the Pacific, Atlantic, and Gulf of Mexico coastlines, and prohibit offshore drilling in the Arctic.” The petition, which was signed by 103,804 activists, can be found here:
