September 20, 2018 – A new poll conducted for CREDO Victory Fund by Public Policy Polling shows that a strong majority of Democrats in New York think it is Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer’s responsibility to make sure all Senate Democrats oppose Brett Kavanaugh. The results showed that 61 percent of Democratic voters in New York said it is Sen. Schumer’s responsibility, 26 percent said it is not and 14 percent were not sure.
Among African-American and Latino Democrats in New York, a full 69 percent believe it is Sen. Schumer’s responsibility to ensure that all Democrats oppose Kavanaugh’s confirmation.
The poll was conducted among 548 Democrats in New York on Sept. 14 and 15, just before the Washington Post published details of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s allegations of sexual assault against Brett Kavanaugh.
“If Chuck Schumer wants to continue leading Senate Democrats, he must lead them in unanimous and unequivocal opposition to Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court,” CREDO Action Co-Director Heidi Hess said. “Sen. Schumer may not think it is his job to unite his caucus in resistance to Donald Trump’s dangerous agenda and right-wing judicial appointments, but a majority of Democrats in New York do. If Kavanaugh is ultimately confirmed with help from any Senate Democrats, Democrats in New York will remember that Sen. Schumer failed to lead his caucus in opposition.”
The poll follows weeks of sustained activism led by CREDO and other progressive groups urging Sen. Schumer to step up and lead his caucus in opposition to Kavanaugh:
- CREDO drafted and spearheaded a Sept. 7 letter signed by more than a dozen progressive organizations urging Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer to immediately unite all Senate Democrats in opposition to Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. More information can be found here and the letter can be viewed here.
- More than 5,500 CREDO members have called Sen. Schumer’s office urging him to deliver 49 Democratic votes against Kavanaugh.
- From Sept. 4–6, CREDO deployed a mobile billboard on Capitol Hill to make clear that it is Sen. Chuck Schumer’s job to unite all Senate Democrats in opposition to Kavanaugh. The billboard read “49 democrats, 49 no votes on Kavanaugh. Do your job, Sen. Schumer.” Video footage of the mobile billboard can be viewed here. High-resolution photos are available upon request.
- More than 80,000 CREDO members have signed a petition urging Sen. Schumer to “hold [his] caucus united in immediate and forceful opposition to Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh.”
