CREDO released the statement below in response to reports that the NBA is moving the 2017 All-Star game out of North Carolina due to the state’s discriminatory law targeting the state’s LGBT community:

The NBA is taking an important stand against North Carolina’s unconstitutional and discriminatory HB2,” said CREDO Senior Campaign Manager Heidi Hess. “This is further evidence that hate and bigotry are bad for business,” Hess continued. “North Carolina’s state-sponsored anti-LGBT discrimination will continue to damage the state’s economy and a reputation until HB2 is fully repealed,” she added.

CREDO has been pressuring the NBA to move the 2017 All-Star game out of North Carolina for months. Highlights of our activism include:

2,000+ PHONE CALLS URGE NBA COMMISSIONER ADAM SILVER TO MOVE ALL-STAR GAME: More than 2,000 CREDO members have called NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s office since June 9 demanding that the 2017 All-Star game be moved out of North Carolina due to the state’s discriminatory, anti-LGBT law, HB 2.

40,000+ PETITION SIGNATURES PRESSURE NBA COMMISSIONER ADAM SILVER TO MOVE ALL-STAR GAME: Since May 12, more than 43,000 CREDO members have signed a petition that reads: “North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory and the Republicans in the North Carolina legislature have made clear that they will do everything in their power to keep discriminating against transgender people. Move the 2017 All-Star Game out of North Carolina unless its hateful anti-LGBT law is repealed.”

CREDO MEMBERS SEND 7,000+ LETTERS TO NBA COMMISSIONER SILVER: More than 7,200 CREDO Mobile members responded to a call to action in their May phone bills by sending physical letters to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver urging him to move the 2017 All-Star game out of North Carolina. Here’s the call to action CREDO members received in their phone bills:
