Donald Trump’s first speech to the United Nations General Assembly today – and in particular, his remarks about North Korea – was nothing short of a complete failure of American leadership. “Despite controlling [Congress and the White House], Republicans have been reduced to scrapping, clawing, and begging to pass this legislation by one or two votes. That alone signifies the power of the resistance,” Zaheed told me. “Because if the resistance didn’t exist, they wouldn’t be in the predicament they are in right now, using unprecedented secrecy to jam through this garbage-fire of a bill.”
“This is a key win in a long fight,” said CREDO Political Director Murshed Zaheed. The momentum in the fight over health care in the United States is on the side of the anti-Trump resistance,” Zaheed continued. “The fact is, Trumpcare is a nightmare for Americans families now, and it will still be a nightmare after the July 4 recess.”

Murshed Zaheed, political director of the liberal group Credo, said it took Trump three days to tweet about a white supremacist who allegedly fatally stabbed two men in Portland, Oregon, who had tried to get him to stop harassing Muslim women on a train. “It’s not really an even-handed situation where you can compare both sides,” Zaheed said.
“A lot of people compare this to Nixon and they say ‘That’s what got Nixon, was the obstruction of justice.’ And it’s true, but this is a lot worse because this one has connections to a foreign power, which the whole back-and-forth around obstruction of justice with Nixon did not include,” Warren said at a San Francisco event sponsored by CREDO, a liberal advocacy group.
So far, the group has donated more than $83 million to nonprofits working on issues like women’s rights, economic justice, voting rights, and climate justice. Recently, that’s included Planned Parenthood, the ACLU, and Black Lives Matter. “It’s often true that the selections will mirror what’s happening in society,” CREDO CEO Ray Morris says.

This is code red time — Democrats need to shut the whole Senate down until there’s a special counsel,” Zaheed said.

Murshed Zaheed, political director of CREDO, warned Democratic leaders that any Democratic efforts to work with Republicans would not get any help from grassroots groups like his. “If Democrats want to push their version of so-called moderate proposals ― good luck to them,” Zaheed said. “I don’t think anybody should be under any illusion that Schumer or [House Minority Leader Nancy] Pelosi will get anything from collaborating with the right-wing extremists that control Congress.”
“We will continue working to stop Keystone XL in the streets and in the Nebraska Public Service Commission, which has yet to issue a key permit the pipeline needs to move forward,” Nelson added. “Attempting to expedite the approval of this foreign oil pipeline is just the latest example of Donald Trump putting corporate interests first with disastrous consequences for the American people.”
“Today’s blockbuster revelation from Director Comey should be a wake-up call to every member of Congress and all Americans,” said CREDO Political Director Murshed Zaheed. “Trump’s Republican lapdogs in Congress must stop playing games and get to the bottom of whether the Trump campaign and its associates colluded with Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.” Zaheed said.

They include leaders of CREDO, WeWillReplaceYou.org, 350 Action and Democracy for America.
“There is no justification for Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer to anoint someone as a member of Democratic leadership who consistently votes with Trump’s extreme right-wing priorities, fails to defend our progressive values, and routinely collaborates with Trump by enabling his racist and fascist agenda grounded in xenophobia and hate,” CREDO Action, one of the groups collecting signatures, wrote on its website.

The government dropped its appeal of that decision, and CREDO subsequently published redacted versions of the two national security letters.

Josh Nelson, deputy political director for the progressive protest group Credo Action, hopes to see President Obama or the next president shutter Dakota Access altogether. More than 378,000 people have signed a petition asking the White House to take executive action and shut down construction its construction. “The only resolution that we’re going to accept is shutting it down entirely,” Nelson said.
It was directly inspired by CREDO, an older left-wing cell company (formerly called Working Assets) that donates a cut to activist nonprofits. In 2012, a Credo super PAC helped unseat several Tea Party congressmen, and Patriot Mobile, according to its website, was a response to that. Ray Morris, CEO of CREDO, is quick to distinguish what it does from Patriot Mobile. “We’re not funding hateful PACs, we’re not funding the NRA,” he said.
Social change organization CREDO said the president needs to take a more definitive position on the pipeline. “If President Obama wants to uphold his promises to do right by indigenous people and fight climate change, he must summon the political courage to intervene now and stop, not just reroute, the Dakota Access pipeline,” CREDO Deputy Political Director Josh Nelson said in a statement.

Callahan interviewed Hoyer on behalf of online progressive heavyweight CREDO Action and We Act Radio, a Washington-based liberal media production house. CREDO, which has been active in efforts to block TPP’s passage, posted the video of the exchange to its Facebook page Wednesday afternoon, along with a message encouraging activists to keep up the pressure.
Paradoxically, getting what was thought to be final approvals seemed to galvanize the public debate against the pipeline. “That’s what triggered a lot of the opposition,” said Josh Nelson, deputy political director of CREDO Action, a progressive lobbying group that opposes the pipeline. “That’s when you had thousands of people descend on Standing Rock.”
Josh Nelson, a Day of Action organizer with CREDO, said the tribes’ unity, coupled with opposition in Iowa, has been the spark that inspired a flame of opposition that keeps on spreading. “People all around the country are watching. This has struck a chord with the environmental and climate change groups and it all flows from tribal leadership and from farmers and landowners in Iowa,” Nelson said.
It remains to be seen how vocal her opposition will be during a lame duck fight, when many Democrats in Congress may be looking to her for guidance. That’s why progressives are already gearing up to push Clinton. On Thursday, a coalition of liberal groups plan to deliver a letter, signed by tens of thousands supporters, asking Clinton to come out against any vote on TPP during the lame duck session of Congress.
On Wednesday, the grassroots liberal groups Democracy for America and CREDO will begin circulating petitions urging Clinton to go further by making a public statement “urging the White House and Democratic congressional leadership to oppose any vote on the TPP, especially during the post-election lame duck session of Congress.”

“We’re thrilled that President Obama has joined the millions of progressive activists who support expanding Social Security,” said CREDO Political Director Murshed Zaheed. “This is a huge reversal from the days when President Obama sought a so-called ‘grand bargain’ with Republicans that included cuts to Social Security benefits,” Zaheed continued, adding, “thanks to relentless grassroots activism, the national conversation has shifted from cutting Social Security to expanding it.”
CREDO singled out Google in part because of the company’s reputation for promoting the “values of diversity and inclusion,” Heidi Hess, a campaign leader for CREDO, said at the time of the video’s release.
Speaking to The Huffington Post this week, Hess called the companies’ willingness to sponsor the Republican convention, despite their opposition to the North Carolina law, “ironic and troubling.”
At the same time, she argued, “it is not surprising that they are able to get over the cognitive dissonance in order to think about their bottom line.”
This spring, several progressive groups said Coca-Cola, Microsoft and a few other big corporations should retract $100,000 contributions pledged for the Republican convention in Cleveland. The progressive groups said the money would help promote Trump, thus compromising the corporations’ own policies not to discriminate. “They can’t be out there professing their commitment to those core values, when they end up making decisions to align their brand with Trump’s racist and sexist campaign,” said Murshed Zaheed, political director of Credo Action. “They can’t have it both ways.”
Come July, some of America’s best-known companies will pay to celebrate the nomination of Donald Trump, whose racist rants have in the past caused NBC, Macy’s and Nascar to distance themselves from him. Progressive political groups like ColorOfChange.org and Credo Action are pressuring Coca-Cola, Walmart, Microsoft, Facebook and Google to cut off money for the Republican gathering.
CREDO Action, the activism arm of the progressive wireless phone company, released a video on Thursday challenging Google’s financial support for the convention. The nearly two-minute-long video — entitled “Why is Google sponsoring hate?” — features an image of the Google homepage as someone searches racist tactics used by Donald Trump, such as “scapegoating immigrants” and “anti-Muslim hysteria.”
Progressive group CREDO Action on Thursday released a new video — shared first with BuzzFeed News — which shows people googling terms like “scapegoating immigrants,” “sexism,” and “racism” and being directed to clips of some of Trump’s offensive statements. The video ends by telling viewers that Google is giving Trump “a platform” with text that reads: “It isn’t too late for Google to do the right thing. Tell Google: Don’t sponsor hate. #DumpTrump.”
On the heels of Donald Trump securing the Republican nomination, CREDO is escalating its campaign urging Google not to sponsor the Republican National Convention across multiple channels with a scathing video, a Facebook digital ad campaign specifically micro-targeting Google employees, and a grassroots call campaign targeting Google executives. “It’s important for Google and Microsoft to be reminded that sponsorship of a Trump-led convention helps legitimize and normalize Trump’s hate,” reads the Credo petition. This sentiment is absolutely on point. Although corporations routinely give money and in-kind donations to both political parties for their conventions, the 2016 Republican convention will be anything but a routine event.
Those critics include the activists at CREDO Action, who launched a petition asking Congress not to move forward with the Burr-Feinstein bill. “As this debate continues to play out over the coming weeks and months, we need to forcefully reject the dangerous language in the Burr-Feinstein bill and any other legislation that would put Americans’ privacy and security at risk by undermining encryption,” the petition concludes.
Apparently tens of thousands of people agreed, and in a very short period of time. By 9:30 this morning (eastern time), the petition had sailed well past 40,000 signatures and was still climbing.
“Investigating Arizona Republicans’ blatant voter disenfranchisement scheme is the right thing to do,” said CREDO Communications Director Josh Nelson. “We applaud the Department of Justice for acting quickly to respond to last month’s primary election debacle,” Nelson continued.
“Republicans around the country are finding new and creative ways to suppress and dilute the votes of African-Americans and Latinos,” Nelson added. “The DOJ must remain vigilant and aggressively crack down on any Republican efforts to suppress Americans’ right to vote in 2016.”

On the left, environmental, gay rights, women’s rights and civil rights groups, as well as labor unions, Democratic political activists and grass roots organizers like CREDO and MoveOn.org have teamed up — with regular conference calls and meetings organized by top former Obama aides and consulting firms, preparing to blast a single message to the Senate nationwide: #DoYourJob.
“Senate Republicans knew Merrick Garland was a well-qualified jurist when they overwhelmingly confirmed him to the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit – and they know it now,” said CREDO Political Director Murshed Zaheed. “Judge Garland’s background does not suggest he will be a progressive champion and he is not the justice a conservative Republican would have nominated, but it is Pres. Obama’s Constitutional duty to nominate Supreme Court justices, and he is clearly qualified.” Zaheed continued. “It’s time for Senate Republicans to stop dodging their constitutional duty and confirm Judge Garland without delay,”
Environmentalists denounced the administration’s decision to keep Arctic and Gulf of Mexico drilling on the table.
Added Elijah Zarlin, climate campaign director for the advocacy organization CREDO Action: “President Obama has spared the people of the Atlantic coast from another oil catastrophe, but in allowing new drilling in the Gulf and Arctic, he’s keeping all of us on course for climate catastrophe. Any new offshore drilling is incompatible with a stable future and it is incompatible with the commitments that President Obama has made.”
“President Obama has spared the people of the Atlantic coast from another oil catastrophe, but in allowing new drilling in the Gulf and Arctic, he’s keeping all of us on course for climate catastrophe,” said CREDO Climate Campaigns Director Elijah Zarlin. “Any new offshore drilling is incompatible with a stable future and it is incompatible with the commitments that President Obama has made,” continued Zarlin. “There is no excuse for any new offshore drilling and it is long past time for President Obama to draw a line to keep all oil, gas and coal on federal lands in the ground.”
“CREDO’s fierce grassroots activism in support of confirming President Obama’s nominee isn’t guaranteed,” said Murshed Zaheed, acting political director at CREDO, which has gathered nearly 100,000 signatures on a petition asking Obama to nominate a progressive. “CREDO is not going to fight to confirm any nominee with a track record of attacking women’s rights, worker’s rights, voting rights, or any other core progressive values.”
CREDO is mobilizing our 4 million members to urge the president to choose a strong progressive who will use her or his position on the court to expand women’s rights, worker’s rights, voting rights, and protect the environment while pushing back against corporate power and money’s grip on politics. This should not be too much to expect.
“We need a strong watchdog willing to stand up to Big Pharma and crack down on exorbitant prescription drug prices, not an industry insider with extensive ties to the very companies he’s supposed to oversee,” said Murshed Zaheed, political director at liberal advocacy group CREDO Action. “We can only hope Dr. Califf will fight for American families instead of protecting the profits of the pharmaceutical industry.”
As of Wednesday, more than 190,000 people had signed a petition on the group’s website asking the Senate to oppose Califf’s nomination.
“We need a strong watchdog willing to stand up to Big Pharma and crack down on exorbitant prescription drug prices, not an industry insider with extensive ties to the very companies he’s supposed to oversee,” said CREDO’s Acting Political Director Murshed Zaheed. “We can only hope Dr. Califf will fight for American families instead of protecting the profits of the pharmaceutical industry,” Zaheed continued.
Aside from talking about Republican obstruction, Democrats are already targeting some of those races in swing states. Arizona Sen. John McCain’s (R) likely Democratic opponent in November, Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick, has already used the issue against him. And activist groups on the left of the spectrum have begun online campaigns aimed at raising pressure on vulnerable Republicans, including petitions and phone campaigns.
On online petition demanding that Senate Republicans hold hearings and allow an up-or-down vote on President Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court has gained over 170,000 signatures. CREDO Action, which refers to itself as a social change organization, posted the petition less than 24 hours after news of Justice Antonin Scalia’s death broke on Saturday and Republicans started pledging to block any Obama nominee.
CREDO’s campaign started less than 24 hours after Republicans’ immediate promises of obstruction in response to news of Justice Scalia’s death, with an online petition that has already been signed by more than 165,000 people. The campaign escalated this morning, with activists making phone calls to the in-district and Washington offices of nine swing state Republican Senators urging them to “stop trying to sabotage our democracy with partisan threats to block President Obama Supreme Court nominee.”
“For over a century, oil, gas and coal companies got rich by foisting onto us the massive health and environmental costs of burning and extracting fossil fuels,” Elijah Zarlin, director of Climate Campaigns at CREDO Action, said in a statement. “The new oil fee in President Obama’s budget is a welcome step to make oil companies begin to pay a small part of the societal cost of their product — but it is unfortunate that it will likely be blocked by Republicans in Congress that are beholden to those oil companies, not the best interests of the American people.”
“Time and time again CREDO’s 3.9 million activists have demonstrated their opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership and other job killing trade deals,” said Murshed Zaheed, CREDO’s Deputy Political Director. “The TPP is a massive giveaway to big corporations that will erode environmental, labor, and intellectual property standards and we are 100% dedicated to defeating it in Congress,” Zaheed continued.
“To name just a token few of the pro-diplomacy organizations that pulled out all the stops to mobilize their grassroots, nation-wide constituencies to push for Implementation Day: The Friends Committee on National Legislation, the National Iranian American Council, J Street, Americans for Peace Now, Women’s Action for New Directions, Just Foreign Policy, Jewish Voice for Peace, Council for a Livable World, Move On.org, CREDO, Win Without War, Peace Action, Vote Vets, Daily Kos, Pax Christi, National Council of Churches, US Conference of Catholic Bishops.”
“Since he took office, the federal coal leasing program has been perhaps the most egregious stain on President Obama’s climate record,” said Elijah Zarlin, Director of Climate Campaigns at CREDO. “It is a welcome and long-overdue move to put a stop to our federal coal giveaway, but if President Obama is serious about leaving a mark of responsible climate leadership, he can not simply set his sights on coal and leave blinders on to other fossil fuels.” Zarlin continued.
“We expect stigmatizing, anti-abortion rhetoric from the extreme right wing and we expect the top Democrat in the House of Representatives to be a champion of women’s legal right to abortion,” said CREDO Senior Campaign Manager Heidi Hess. “Leader Pelosi’s comments, which reinforce right-wing talking points, are out of step with both the values of most Democrats and the district she represents in San Francisco,” Hess continued. “Women deserve access to abortion care whenever they need it, without apology.”
