Arizona’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been incarcerating, harassing, humiliating and dehumanizing Latinx and immigrant communities in Maricopa County, Arizona, for years. He forced hundreds of people to live in a tent city in the sweltering Phoenix summer heat and then boasted about having his own “concentration camp.” He called Donald Trump his “true political soul mate,” and even defied the orders of the federal government to stop racially profiling Latinx people during immigration-enforcement operations. That’s why CREDO donated $15,000 to the Bazta Arpaio campaign and helped turn out the vote against Arpaio in the November election. And thanks to the organizing efforts of Arizona’s Latinx community and its allies, Arpaio’s outrageous abuse of power is coming to an end. He was ousted in a resounding defeat at the ballot box.
